Vacature - Trainee Research

Within the project “Campus Eemsdelta Groningen: future for a resilient region” we are looking for two research assistants to be employed as trainees within STUDENT-labs (a collaboration between the University of Groningen/Faculty of Spatial Sciences and RIO projects consultancy).   

Campus Eemsdelta Groningen is an innovative development in Appingedam, an area where four schools and about 1700 pupils but also different recreation,culture and sport facilities for the broader community will be located. At the moment the campus is being developed/built and will most likely be in use from the autumn of 2022. Prior to moving to the new campus, the campus management andthe Eemsdelta municipality have asked the Faculty of Spatial Sciences (Elen-Maarja Trell and Gwenda van der Vaart) to explore the wishes and expectations of the students and other community members for the new campus, to hear their ideas about the ways that the campus could contribute to the liveability and resilience of the area, but also enable them to express any worries they might have with regards to the development of the campus. In addition, the campus management would like to measure the satisfaction of the pupils with: different elements of their current schools, as well as with the liveability of the Eemsdelta municipality in general.   

In order to collect and analyze data to explore the above themes, we are looking for tworesearch-assistants/trainees to join us from March to July 2022 (with a possible extension) for +/- 8 hours per week. 

We are looking for somebody with the following skills/ characteristics:

  • Experience with quantitative or qualitative research (see detailsbelow, the requirements differ based on whether you are applying for the quantitativeor the qualitative part of the research) 
  • Good research skills in general  
  • Ability to work independently/with somesupervision  
  • Proactive attitude 
  • Precise and with an eye for detail  
  • In the case you are applying for the quantitativeposition: fluent in English OR Dutch; being able to contribute to designing a survey (knowing the basics of survey design, types of questions,scales to use etc.); some experience with using an online platform for designing and distributing the survey (e.g. Qualtrics, Mentimeter, Google, any other relevant program); being able to independently / with some supervision analyze the collected data using relevant software (either SPSS, Stata or R) and interpret the results for the broader audience;    
  • In the case you are applying for the qualitative position: fluentin Dutch language; being able to contribute to developing an interviewguide and other relevant documents for the qualitative research process(consent form, information sheet etc.); some experience in conducting (semi-structured) interviews; ability to transcribe (here, in addition to being able to type fast, being thorough and having attention for detail is relevant); some background knowledge / experience in qualitative data analysis; experience with qualitative data analysis software is a bonus

What we offer:

  • Further developing your skills in either quantitative or qualitative research; 
  • Experience in working as part of different teams (STUDENT-labs; a research-team;in collaboration with stakeholders from practice); 
  • Possibility for an extension / continuing in either the research projector within STUDENT-labs, potentially in a different function; 
  • Salary, based on experience, varying between 10-12 euro bruto per hour;  
  • Possibility to expand your network / contacts with partners fromacademia, consultancy and different governmental institutions;
